Why is Óbidos Portugal Chocolate Festival celebrated?

King Alfonso IV, father of Pedro was against the forbidden romance of Prince Pedro and Ines, which happened around 14th century. The King ordered Ines to be killed and Prince Pedro launched civil war to avenge Ines.

This whole incident inspired poets and artists to celebrate the romance of Prince Pedro and Ines by sculpting the Chocolate and that’s how the chocolate festival born.

The University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in the world

It was when King Dinis signed the "Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis" that the University was created. It began to function in Lisbon, but in 1308 it was transferred to Coimbra, alternating between the two cities until 1537, when it was definitively established in the city on the Mondego River, in Coimbra. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was also the only Portuguese-speaking university in the world.
