Image
The University of Coimbra , founded in 1290, is the first university in Portugal and one of the oldest universities in the world. It was when King Dinis signed the "Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis" that the University was created. It began to function in Lisbon, but in 1308 it was transferred to Coimbra, alternating between the two cities until 1537, when it was definitively established in the city on the Mondego River, in Coimbra. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was also the only Portuguese-speaking university in the world. It was built on the site of a former palace, and its 16th century campus has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
